Antonia Coello Novello served as surgeon general under President George H. W. Bush from 1990 to 1993. She focused on publicizing the dangers of smoking and teenage drinking, expanding AIDS education, and improving health care for women, minorities, and children.

Desmond Mpilo Tutu (born 7 October 1931) is a South African cleric and activist who rose to worldwide fame during the 1980s as an opponent of apartheid. In 1984, Tutu became the second South African to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Tutu was elected and ordained the first black South African Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town.

*Students selected in the leadership programs are expected to maintain program attendance and participation  at a rate of 90% for the entire year.

*Students who do not comply with program attendance requirements may be terminated from the leadership program.

The Youth Leadership Development Programs provide opportunities for Hispanic and African-American students to:

*Develop their leadership skills.

*Attend a college of their choice.

*Encounter a world of meaning and discovery.

Gloria Wilson: Black Youth Leadership Development Program Coordinator

*Gloria has been with the Red Cross for 7 years.

* She moved from Georgia to Rochester 40 years ago to be closer to her family. 

* Growing up Gloria was involved with church and youth activities. 

*Her family taught her to respect other cultures.

* She loves to sing and travel.

* Gloria was first employed by the Red Cross as a director for a summer youth programs. 

* Says the program’s purpose is to assist youth in becoming “actively engaged in the improvement of their futures, neighborhoods, and communities.”

* Sees the program’s biggest achievement as having students return to the program year after year.

* Her most memorable experience in the program is seeing the faces of participants as they graduate and seeing them put their leadership skills to use.

* Gloria is most proud of the fundraiser program participants had for victims of Hurricane Katrina.

* Glorimar was born and raised in Rochester.

* She has worked with the programs as an Administrative Secretary for 3 years.

* Her mother taught her many positive lessons and lead her down the right path.     

* Glorimar loves to take care of her family, read, work out, and dance.

* She became involved with the Red Cross after graduating from MCC and finding out about the program. 

* In her opinion the program’s biggest achievement is when youth learn and apply the concepts and goals of the program.

* Glorimar’s most memorable experience with the program has been seeing youth graduate, go to college, and fulfill the dreams they had while in the leadership programs.

*Angel has been with the program for seven years.

* He was born and raised in Arroyo, Puerto Rico and moved to the United States at the age of 14.

* Growing up Angel helped his grandparents working in the mountains.  He was very involved with sports such as baseball, basketball, and volleyball.

* He has always enjoyed working with young people and started working with the program as a part time mentoring coordinator.  

* Angel views the program’s biggest achievement as helping students graduate from college so they can come back to the Red Cross programs to help other students.  

* The Youth Talent Show Fundraiser that benefitted disaster victims in the community, is the event he’s most proud of.

LOCAL PROFESSOR EXPLORES NETWORKING

Tom Proietti Will Address the Nature and Value of Networking

    Tom Proietti a professor at St. John Fisher and Monroe Community colleges will speak on the various aspects and advantages of networking. He will explore the immense potential of building relationships.  The discussion will be held November 12^th at 6:30 p.m. at the St. John Fisher Cleary Auditorium, 3690 East Avenue Rochester NY, 14618.
